This book provides an introduction to conformal field theory and areview of its applications to critical phenomena in condensedmattersystems. After reviewing simple phase transitions and explaining thefoundations of conformal invariance and the algebraic methodsrequired, it proceeds to the explicit calculation of fourpointcorrelators. Numerical methods for matrix diagonalization aredescribed as well as finitesize scaling techniques and theirconformal extensions. Many exercises are included. Applications treatthe Ising, Potts, chiral Potts, YangLee, percolation and XY models,the XXZ chain, linear polymers, tricritical points, conformalturbulence, surface criticality and profiles, defect lines andaperiodically modulated systems, persistent currents and dynamicalscaling. The vicinity of the critical point is studied culminating inthe exact solution of the twodimensional Ising model at the criticaltemperature in a magnetic field. Relevant experimental results arereviewed.
