Day 2. Alfama and São Jorge Castle

Morning. Take tram 28 from Martim Moniz at 8:30, before the queues, to the stop below the castle. Walk the castle walls (allow 1.5 hours, ticket about €15 each).

Late morning. Walk downhill through Alfama's lanes to the Santa Luzia viewpoint for the classic view of red roofs and the river. 10 minutes on foot.

Lunch. A small family-run tasca on the lanes below the viewpoint: grilled sardines or the dish of the day, about €15–18 per person with wine.

Afternoon. National Tile Museum, 15 minutes by bus 759 from the river. Quiet, uncrowded and good if it rains.

Evening. A fado house in Alfama. Book a 20:30 dinner-and-show seating a few days ahead; budget €45–60 per person.

Day 5. Sintra day trip

  • 8:40 train from Rossio station, 40 minutes, about €2.50 each way.
  • 9:30 bus 434 up the hill to Pena Palace. Book a timed ticket online for 10:00 to skip the line.
  • 12:30 walk down through the forest park to the Moorish Castle (30 minutes, some steep steps, wear trainers).
  • 14:00 late lunch in the old town; try the local almond-and-cheese pastries.
  • 16:00 Quinta da Regaleira gardens and the initiation well.
  • 18:30 train back to Lisbon.

Where to stay

  • Chiado — central, flat-ish streets, easy for every day of this plan. Best overall fit.
  • Alfama — atmospheric and quieter at night, but steep hills with luggage.

About this service

We plan each port day around the ship's schedule: what to do in the hours you have ashore, how to get from the cruise terminal to the sights, and a safe buffer to be back before all-aboard time. You see when an independent plan works and when the ship's own excursion is the safer choice, for example at a tender port or far from the pier.

What is included

  • What you getA plan for each port as formatted text: what to see, how to get there from the pier, timings with a return buffer, where to eat and a cost estimate. Check port times with your cruise line and prices on official sites; we do not book shore excursions or transport.
  • Plan per portWhat fits in your hours ashore
  • From the pierWalk, shuttle, taxi or train
  • Back-on-board bufferReturn times well before all aboard
  • Independent or excursionWhich ports suit going alone
  • Cost per portTransport, tickets and food

What we need from you

Your cruise line and ship, the ports with arrival and departure times, who is travelling, your mobility, interests and how much you want to spend ashore.

We will ask you:

  • Which ports, with arrival and departure times?
  • Which ports have you visited before?
  • Who is going ashore, and can everyone walk far?
  • What do you enjoy on a port day?

Questions and answers

What if the ship leaves without me?

That is the main risk of going alone, so every plan has a return buffer and we flag ports where the ship's excursion is safer.

What is a tender port?

A port where small boats take you ashore. It adds waiting time, and we plan less in those ports.

Can you plan a sea day too?

No, we focus on port days. Your ship's daily program covers sea days.
