Song lyrics: "Ruth and Sam", a 30th anniversary song

Verse 1

Summer of '96, the county fair, Sam threw rings and missed them every time. Ruth just laughed and tossed one from her chair, Won the goldfish for a single dime. He said, "Well, I guess I owe you a dance," She said, "Only if you lead me right." Neither one of them stood a chance: They were dancing till the end of night.

Chorus

Thirty years and you're still turning Like the wheel above that fair, Thirty years, the lights still burning, Ruth and Sam, you're always there.

Verse 2

Then a rented house with a leaking roof, And a crib you painted in the hall, Three kids running round as living proof That a goldfish really started it all. Late shifts, school runs, birthday cakes, Saturday pancakes, Sunday rain, Whatever life would give or take, You found each other's hand again.

Chorus

Thirty years and you're still turning Like the wheel above that fair, Thirty years, the lights still burning, Ruth and Sam, you're always there.

Bridge

And if the music ever slows, If the lights go dim someday, We know just how the story goes: He'll take her hand and lead the way.

Verse 3

Tonight the garden lights are glowing, The grandkids chasing round the tree. Dad blames his tears on wind that's blowing, And Mom just winks across at me.

Final chorus (×2)

Thirty years and you're still turning Like the wheel above that fair, Thirty years, the lights still burning, Ruth and Sam, you're always there.

Performance note: the chorus works as a sing-along; the last line can be repeated slowly a cappella to finish.

Client: Emily, ordering a song for her parents' 30th wedding anniversary party. Details she shared: they met at a county fair in 1996, Ruth won a goldfish at the ring toss after Sam missed every throw, they have three kids, Sam always cries at family events and blames the wind.

Genre: warm country-pop, mid-tempo, about 100 BPM. Structure: verse – chorus – verse – chorus – bridge – verse – chorus ×2.

The client and all details are made up.

About this service

A ceremony reading has to be heard, not read: one to two minutes at a steady pace, short lines that a nervous friend or the officiant can deliver without stumbling, and images that suit both families in the room. We write an original wedding poem or vows in verse from your story, how you met, what you promise and the words you use with each other, in the length and tone of your ceremony. For vows we can write a matching pair, so both partners speak in the same form without repeating each other.

What we need from you

Your names, how you met and a few moments from your story, who will read the poem or speak the vows, the style of the ceremony, how long the reading may be and words or topics to avoid.

We will ask you:

  • Is it a reading, vows or both?
  • Who will read it at the ceremony?
  • How long may the reading be?
  • Is the ceremony religious, civil or something else?

Questions and answers

Can the vows be different for each of us?

Yes. In Premium we write two vows in the same form and length, each in its own voice, so neither sounds like a copy of the other.

Can it include a line in another language?

Yes, for bilingual families we can weave in a line or a refrain in the second language you name.

Does it have to rhyme?

No. Many couples prefer free verse for vows. Tell us in the brief, and we keep a clear rhythm either way.
