Day 2. Alfama and São Jorge Castle

Morning. Take tram 28 from Martim Moniz at 8:30, before the queues, to the stop below the castle. Walk the castle walls (allow 1.5 hours, ticket about €15 each).

Late morning. Walk downhill through Alfama's lanes to the Santa Luzia viewpoint for the classic view of red roofs and the river. 10 minutes on foot.

Lunch. A small family-run tasca on the lanes below the viewpoint: grilled sardines or the dish of the day, about €15–18 per person with wine.

Afternoon. National Tile Museum, 15 minutes by bus 759 from the river. Quiet, uncrowded and good if it rains.

Evening. A fado house in Alfama. Book a 20:30 dinner-and-show seating a few days ahead; budget €45–60 per person.

Day 5. Sintra day trip

  • 8:40 train from Rossio station, 40 minutes, about €2.50 each way.
  • 9:30 bus 434 up the hill to Pena Palace. Book a timed ticket online for 10:00 to skip the line.
  • 12:30 walk down through the forest park to the Moorish Castle (30 minutes, some steep steps, wear trainers).
  • 14:00 late lunch in the old town; try the local almond-and-cheese pastries.
  • 16:00 Quinta da Regaleira gardens and the initiation well.
  • 18:30 train back to Lisbon.

Where to stay

  • Chiado — central, flat-ish streets, easy for every day of this plan. Best overall fit.
  • Alfama — atmospheric and quieter at night, but steep hills with luggage.

About this service

We plan a trip across Europe by train: the order of cities that keeps journeys short, which legs are scenic and worth doing in daylight, and where a night train saves a hotel night. You get journey times between stops and a note on whether a rail pass or point-to-point tickets fit your route better.

What is included

  • What you getA day-by-day rail itinerary as formatted text: the city order, train journeys with approximate times, what to see in each stop, areas to stay near the station and a budget estimate. Timetables, seat reservation rules and fares change, so check them with the rail operators; we do not sell or book tickets.

What we need from you

Where you start and end, how many days, the cities you want and those you are unsure about, how you feel about long train days or night trains, your budget and what is booked.

We will ask you:

  • Which cities do you want to visit?
  • How many days, and where do you fly in and out?
  • Are you open to night trains?
  • How many hours on a train is too many for one day?

Questions and answers

Is an Interrail or Eurail pass worth it?

We compare the pass with typical fares for your route, including seat reservation fees on high-speed trains. Check current prices before buying.

Can you add a day trip by train?

Yes. We suggest day trips that are under about two hours each way so you still have time there.

What if a train is cancelled?

We note a back-up connection for tight legs. On the day, follow the operator's instructions.
