Lesson 2.1 — The 50/30/20 rule (excerpt)

Goal: by the end of this lesson you can split your take-home pay into three parts and see which one is out of balance.

Imagine your take-home pay is $3,000 a month. The 50/30/20 rule says:

  • 50% — needs ($1,500): rent, groceries, transport, minimum loan payments. Things you'd still pay for if you lost your job tomorrow.
  • 30% — wants ($900): eating out, streaming, gym, trips. Life is meant to be enjoyed; this part makes the budget something you can actually live with.
  • 20% — future you ($600): emergency fund, extra debt payments, saving for goals.

Here's the honest part: in many cities rent alone eats 40% of a first salary. That's fine. The rule is a compass, not a law. If needs take 60%, the question is simply: where do the extra 10% come from — wants, or future you, and for how long?

Example. Sam earns $2,800. Rent and bills: $1,550 (55%). Wants: $950 (34%). Savings: $300 (11%). Sam doesn't need to cut everything. Moving $150 from takeaway to savings brings him to 16% in one step.

Practice task

  1. Take last month's spending from Lesson 1.1
  2. Sort every line into Needs, Wants or Future
  3. Work out each share as a percentage of take-home pay
  4. Write one change that moves you 5% closer to 50/30/20

Quick check (with answers)

  1. Your phone bill is a… need (you need a working phone; the newest model is a want)
  2. Paying more than the minimum on a credit card counts as… future you
  3. True or false: if your needs exceed 50%, the budget has failed. False — adjust the other two parts

Client: a personal finance coach. Audience: people aged 20–30 with a first full-time job. Format: short video lessons with a text version and a worksheet.

About this service

Office staff who are new to Excel usually learn it by copying a colleague’s file and are afraid to break the formulas. We write a written Excel course built around their real work: entering and formatting data, sorting and filtering, the first formulas such as SUM, IF and XLOOKUP, absolute references, simple charts and pivot tables, and printing a report that fits on the page. Every lesson ends with a practice task on a small sample table, with the answer given step by step.

What is included

  • What you getA written lesson plan and, from Standard, lessons with explanations, menu paths, a sample table to rebuild and a practice task with its solution, on the order page and as a Word (.docx) or PDF file.
  • Work-based examplesSales lists, timesheets or budgets like yours
  • Menu paths and shortcutsFor your version and menu language
  • Formulas step by stepSUM, IF, XLOOKUP and references explained
  • Practice with answersA task after every lesson
  • Written courseNot a video or live class

How it works

  1. 1
BriefYou describe the learners and their work
  2. 2
PlanWe order topics from first cell to pivot table
  3. 3
LessonsWe write lessons and practice tasks

What we need from you

The Excel version and language of the menus, Windows or Mac, what learners do at work, their current level, and examples of the tables they deal with as Excel or PDF files with private data removed.

We will ask you:

  • Which Excel version and menu language do learners use?
  • What do they need Excel for at work?
  • What can they already do?
  • Who will use the lessons: one person, a team or your students?

Questions and answers

Do I get practice files with formulas?

Sample tables come inside the lessons and can be pasted into Excel; delivered files do not contain live formulas. Learners type the formulas themselves, which is the point of the practice.

Will the formula names match my language?

Yes, name your menu language, and we use the local function names, for example СУММ instead of SUM.

Can I sell these lessons in my own course?

Yes, the texts are yours to use. Check the steps in your Excel version before publishing, as menus change over time.
