Proofreading: annual report of a community garden association
Before and after (excerpt)
Before:
This year the garden welcomed 23 new members, and our waiting list have grown to 41 familys. Thanks to a council grant of £2,400 we replaced the old shed, it's roof had been leaking since 2023. Volunteers put in over 1.200 hours, a new record! The composting area was moved behind plot 14, which means the paths along plots 12-16 is now clear for wheelchairs. Special thanks goes to Margret Hale who organised the Spring Plant sale.

Consistency check across the whole report
- Names: "Margaret Hale" (4 times), "Tom Okoye" (3), "Priya Shah" (2), all now spelled the same way everywhere
- Organisation name: "Elm Street Community Garden" used in full the first time, then "the garden"; 3 cases of "Elm St. Garden" changed
- Spelling: British throughout ("organised", "colour", "programme"); 7 American forms changed
- Numbers: thousands with a comma, ranges with an en dash; amounts checked against the finance table on page 5, all match
Not changed (for you to decide)
- Paragraph 6 says "nearly 50 volunteers"; the table on page 5 lists 46. Both can be correct, so we left the wording.
- "Potluck" appears both with and without a hyphen in quotes from members; quotes were kept as written.
Total: 2,684 words checked, 57 corrections.

About this service
Game text lives in string tables where one broken tag or a deleted {player_name} placeholder can crash a dialogue box. We proofread dialogue, quest text, item descriptions and UI strings, keep every placeholder, tag and line key intact and make sure each character keeps their own voice. We also flag strings that look too long for a button or a tooltip.
What is included
- What you getCorrected strings with their keys in the same order, a list of changes and notes on strings that may not fit, on the order page and as a Word (.docx) file.
- Placeholders kept{name}, %d and markup left intact
- Character voicesFixes that keep each one's style
- UI consistencyOne term for each item and menu
- Length flagsStrings that may overflow
- Keys in orderEasy to paste back into your table
How it works
- 1BriefYou send the strings and notes
- 2ProofreadingWe fix text, keeping tags intact
- 3DeliveryYou get strings ready to paste back
What we need from you
The strings pasted as key and text, or attached as an Excel or Word file, a short note on the characters and any length limits for UI text.
We will ask you:
- What kind of game is it?
- Which placeholders and tags does your engine use?
- Are there length limits for buttons or tooltips?
- Should invented names and slang stay as they are?

Questions and answers
Will you change my characters' made-up words?
No. Invented names, slang and deliberate misspellings stay; list them in the brief so we know.
Can I send my string table as a spreadsheet?
Yes. We read the key and text columns and return the corrected strings with the same keys.
Do you test the text in the game?
No, we cannot run your build. Length flags are estimates based on the limits you give.
