About this service

We format your footnotes and bibliography by OSCOLA, the Oxford standard used in UK and many Commonwealth law schools: cases with neutral citations and law reports, legislation with sections, and secondary sources with pinpoints. OSCOLA has its own habits, such as no full stops in abbreviations, footnotes ending with a full stop and cases and legislation kept out of the bibliography in separate tables. We do not look up cases or reports online, so missing citations or page numbers are listed for you, and we format citations without checking the law itself.

What is included

  • What you getOSCOLA footnotes for each source, a bibliography of secondary sources, and in higher packages separate tables of cases and legislation; Premium also checks the footnotes in your essay for form and pinpoints. You get it as text on the order page and as a Word (.docx) file.
  • CasesNeutral citations and law reports in order
  • LegislationActs, sections, statutory instruments, EU law
  • Secondary sourcesBooks, articles, Hansard, reports
  • Short formsLater references and ibid. used OSCOLA's way

How it works

  1. 1
SourcesYou send cases, statutes and texts
  2. 2
    FootnotesWe format notes and tables
  3. 3
    GapsYou add missing citations

What we need from you

Your cases, legislation and secondary sources as text, photos or a Word or PDF file, your law school's OSCOLA notes and, for Premium, the essay with footnotes.

We will ask you:

  • Which law school and module is this for?
  • Do you need tables of cases and legislation?
  • Do you cite EU, ECHR or international materials?

Questions and answers

Is this legal advice?

No. We format citations only; we do not check whether a case is still good law or whether your argument is right.

Which law report should I cite?

OSCOLA prefers the most authoritative report, such as the official Law Reports. We use the reports you give and keep the neutral citation in front.

Do footnotes count toward my word limit?

That depends on your school's rules. OSCOLA footnotes are kept short, which helps if they do.

Do you look up missing details online?

No, we work only with what you send. Every source without a year, pages, DOI or publisher goes into a list, you add the details, and we update the entry within your revisions.
