Literature matrix: 3 studies on remote work and employee wellbeing
Structured notes: Paper 1
Harlow & Byrne (2022), "Home as office: a two-wave study of remote employees"
- Research question: Does moving to fully remote work change emotional exhaustion over 12 months?
- Method: two-wave online survey, baseline and 12 months later
- Sample: 612 office employees from 9 mid-sized firms; 71% retained at wave 2
- Key findings: exhaustion fell slightly overall, but rose among employees with children under 6 and those without a separate room to work in
- Limitations: self-report only; firms chose to take part, which may favour well-managed companies
- Quotable: "The home was not the problem; the absence of a door was" (p. 14)
Comparison matrix
| Harlow & Byrne (2022) | Mendez et al. (2023) | Okafor (2024) | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Design | Longitudinal survey, 2 waves | Cross-sectional survey | Qualitative interviews |
| Sample | 612 employees, 9 firms | 1,480 employees, one country | 28 team leads |
| Work mode | Fully remote | Remote, hybrid, office | Hybrid |
| Wellbeing measure | Emotional exhaustion scale | Life satisfaction, 1 item | Themes from interviews |
| Main effect | Small decrease in exhaustion | Hybrid highest satisfaction | Hybrid adds coordination stress for managers |
| Key moderator | Childcare, workspace | Commute length | Team size |
| Main limitation | Self-selected firms | Single-item measure, no causality | Small, one sector |
Themes and agreements
- Conditions matter more than location. All three studies point to home setup, commute or team size as what decides whether remote work helps or hurts (Harlow & Byrne p. 14; Mendez et al. p. 9; Okafor p. 22).
- Hybrid looks best for employees, but Okafor shows the cost moves to managers, who plan around whose day it is in the office.
Contradictions
- Harlow & Byrne find exhaustion falls with full remote work; Mendez et al. find fully remote employees report lower life satisfaction than hybrid ones. The two measure different things (exhaustion vs. overall satisfaction), so they may not truly conflict.
Gaps
- No study follows people for more than 12 months.
- None compares employees and their managers within the same teams.
- Wellbeing of employees with disabilities is not analysed separately in any of the three.

About this service
An annotated bibliography asks for more than a summary: each entry has to give the full reference in your style, say what the source argues and how, judge its strengths and limits and explain why it matters for your topic. Send the papers as PDF files with selectable text or Word files with your topic and the annotation rules from your course or journal, and we write an annotation of the length you set for every source. The annotations are reading notes to check and adapt, and the evaluation part is clearly marked so you can bring in your own view.
What is included
- What you getA Word document with each source's full reference in your citation style followed by its annotation (summary, method, evaluation and relevance), sorted as your style requires. From Standard, also an Excel table of all sources with key fields for quick comparison.
- Full referencesIn APA, MLA, Chicago or your style
- Summary and methodWhat the source argues and how
- EvaluationStrengths and limits, clearly marked
- RelevanceWhy it matters for your question

What we need from you
The papers as PDF with selectable text or Word files (up to 5 files; several papers can be merged into one PDF), your topic or research question, the citation style, the length of each annotation in words and any rubric from your course.
We will ask you:
- What is your topic or research question?
- Which citation style do you use?
- How long should each annotation be?
- Does your course give a rubric or example?

Questions and answers
Can I submit the annotations as my own work?
Check your institution's rules first. We provide reading notes to help you; adapt them, add your own evaluation and follow your course's policy on outside help.
How many sources fit in one order?
Up to 3, 6 or 10 depending on the package, within about 40,000 words in total. Short papers or chapters let you fit more.
Can you find more papers on my topic?
No. We work only with the papers you send and do not search databases or the web.
What if my papers are very long?
All files together can hold about 40,000 words. Leave out appendices and reference lists, or send fewer papers.
