Subtitles and translation: a 24-minute pottery tutorial

Subtitle rules used

  • Up to 2 lines per cue, up to 42 characters per line.
  • Each cue stays on screen 1.2 to 6 seconds; reading speed under 17 characters per second.
  • Filler words ("um", "you know") and false starts removed; meaning and the teacher's tone kept.
  • Speaker labels only when a second voice appears off camera.
  • Technical terms checked for consistency: centering, coning, trimming, leather-hard.

English subtitles (fragment)

112
00:07:41,200 --> 00:07:44,050
Before you open the bowl,
the clay has to be perfectly centered.

113
00:07:44,300 --> 00:07:47,900
Brace your left elbow on your knee
and push in with the heel of your hand.

114
00:07:48,100 --> 00:07:51,350
If the clay wobbles against your palm,
it's not there yet.

115
00:07:51,600 --> 00:07:54,800
[STUDENT] How long do I keep pushing?

116
00:07:55,000 --> 00:07:59,400
Until it feels like it's standing still,
even though the wheel is spinning.

Spanish translation (same cues)

112
00:07:41,200 --> 00:07:44,050
Antes de abrir el cuenco,
el barro tiene que estar bien centrado.

113
00:07:44,300 --> 00:07:47,900
Apoya el codo izquierdo en la rodilla
y empuja con la base de la mano.

114
00:07:48,100 --> 00:07:51,350
Si el barro tiembla bajo tu palma,
todavía no está listo.

115
00:07:51,600 --> 00:07:54,800
[ALUMNA] ¿Cuánto tiempo sigo empujando?

116
00:07:55,000 --> 00:07:59,400
Hasta que parezca quieto,
aunque el torno siga girando.

Delivery notes

  • Files: clay-corner-first-bowl_en.srt (318 cues), clay-corner-first-bowl_es.srt (318 cues). Timings are identical, so the two tracks can be switched without drift.
  • Terms: "leather-hard" translated as dureza de cuero, the term used by Spanish-speaking potters.
  • To check: at 14:22 the teacher names a glaze brand quietly; marked as [glaze name] since it's not clearly audible.

Client: Clay Corner, a small pottery studio with a video channel. Video: "Throwing your first bowl", 24 min 10 s. Ordered: English subtitles plus a Spanish translation. Delivered as two SRT files, one per language.

The client and all details are made up.

About this service

Researchers analyze focus groups and user interviews from transcripts: they code themes, pull quotes for the report and go back to the exact moment a participant hesitated. We transcribe your session from a link with product names, features and research terms from your brief spelled right and the time of every line, so each quote can be traced back to the recording. The transcript does not label who is speaking; with the times and your session notes, marking the moderator and participants is quick.

What we need from you

A link to the session recording, its language, the product, feature and brand names to spell exactly, and whether you need a translation.

We will ask you:

  • Is it a focus group or a one-on-one interview?
  • Which language is spoken, and do you need a translation?
  • Which product, feature or brand names come up?

Questions and answers

Are speakers labeled in the transcript?

No, the transcript does not mark speakers. Each line has its time, so you can add the moderator and participant labels from your notes or the recording.

What about overlapping voices in a focus group?

Where people talk at once, the clearest speech is transcribed. A good table microphone makes a big difference.

Is participant consent needed?

Make sure participants agreed to the recording and to it being transcribed, as your research rules require.
