English subtitles (fragment)
112
00:07:41,200 --> 00:07:44,050
Before you open the bowl,
the clay has to be perfectly centered.
113
00:07:44,300 --> 00:07:47,900
Brace your left elbow on your knee
and push in with the heel of your hand.
114
00:07:48,100 --> 00:07:51,350
If the clay wobbles against your palm,
it's not there yet.
115
00:07:51,600 --> 00:07:54,800
[STUDENT] How long do I keep pushing?
116
00:07:55,000 --> 00:07:59,400
Until it feels like it's standing still,
even though the wheel is spinning.
Spanish translation (same cues)
112
00:07:41,200 --> 00:07:44,050
Antes de abrir el cuenco,
el barro tiene que estar bien centrado.
113
00:07:44,300 --> 00:07:47,900
Apoya el codo izquierdo en la rodilla
y empuja con la base de la mano.
114
00:07:48,100 --> 00:07:51,350
Si el barro tiembla bajo tu palma,
todavía no está listo.
115
00:07:51,600 --> 00:07:54,800
[ALUMNA] ¿Cuánto tiempo sigo empujando?
116
00:07:55,000 --> 00:07:59,400
Hasta que parezca quieto,
aunque el torno siga girando.
Delivery notes
- Files: clay-corner-first-bowl_en.srt (318 cues), clay-corner-first-bowl_es.srt (318 cues). Timings are identical, so the two tracks can be switched without drift.
- Terms: "leather-hard" translated as dureza de cuero, the term used by Spanish-speaking potters.
- To check: at 14:22 the teacher names a glaze brand quietly; marked as [glaze name] since it's not clearly audible.
Client: Clay Corner, a small pottery studio with a video channel. Video: "Throwing your first bowl", 24 min 10 s. Ordered: English subtitles plus a Spanish translation. Delivered as two SRT files, one per language.
The client and all details are made up.
About this service
Recordings of grandparents, elders and long-time residents hold stories nobody wrote down, but they are hard to transcribe: soft voices, long pauses, old place names, family nicknames and words from another language slipped into the conversation. We transcribe your family interview or oral history recording from a link, with the names, places and dates from your brief spelled the way your family writes them. You get a text the family can read, print, quote in a memoir or keep with the archive, with timings that lead back to the voice.
What is included
- What you getAn interview transcript as plain text in paragraphs, plus SRT and VTT files with timings, ready to print, quote or add as subtitles to the family video.
- Family spellingNames, nicknames and places your way
- Old and local wordsKept as spoken, not modernised
- Quiet voicesSoft speech and long pauses handled
- Timed linesFind any story back in the recording

What we need from you
A link to the recording, the language spoken (and any second language that slips in), names of people, villages, towns and streets that come up, approximate dates, and whether you need a translation.
We will ask you:
- Who is speaking, and in which language?
- Which names, places and dates come up?
- How was it recorded?
- Do you need the original or a translation?

Questions and answers
Are the interviewer and the speaker labelled?
No. Lines are timed but not marked by speaker; questions and answers are usually easy to tell apart.
Our old cassette sounds poor. Will it work?
Digitise it and send a link. Clear parts are transcribed in full; hard-to-hear words may be less accurate, and you can point them out for revision.
Should we ask permission before sharing the transcript?
It is good practice to have the speaker's or family's agreement before publishing or donating a transcript to an archive.
