The main product photo for a marketplace: requirements and common mistakes

3 min read

On a marketplace, the main photo does the job of a shop window. It is the only picture a buyer sees in the search results, next to dozens of similar products, and it decides whether they click. Here is what the main photo should look like and the mistakes that cost sales or get the photo rejected.

The main product photo: what matters

Why the main photo matters so much

In the search results every listing gets the same small square. The buyer compares them in a second: what the product is, whether it looks good, whether it looks like the real thing. A clear, bright main photo gets more clicks, and more clicks usually mean a better position in the search.

What most marketplaces expect

Every platform has its own rules, but the main image requirements are similar almost everywhere. Amazon, for example, asks for:

  • A pure white background. The product is shown alone, without a room, a table or props.
  • The product fills most of the frame, about 85% of the picture, so it is not lost in white space.
  • The whole product in sharp focus, not cut off at the edges.
  • No text, logos, badges or watermarks on the main image. Captions and benefits belong in the other pictures of the listing.
  • Enough resolution for zoom: at least 1000 pixels on the longest side, better 1600 or more.
  • Only what the buyer gets. Accessories that are not in the box should not be in the picture.

Before uploading, check the current rules of your marketplace: they change, and some categories have their own.

How to shoot the source photo

You do not need a studio to get a good starting photo:

  • Shoot by a window in daylight, without direct sun.
  • Put the product on a plain light surface.
  • Hold the camera level with the product, not from above at an angle.
  • Fill the frame and keep the whole product in focus.
  • Wipe off dust and fingerprints: every speck shows at full size.

Common mistakes

  • A grey or off-white background. It looks dirty next to listings with a clean white one.
  • Shadows and reflections that hide the shape of the product.
  • The product too small in a large white square.
  • Distorted colors. If the item arrives in a different shade, expect returns and bad reviews.
  • Collages of several angles in the main image. One product, one clear view.
  • A photo that does not match the real product: a different model, a different package, an older design.

In short

A white background, a product that fills the frame, sharp focus, true colors and nothing extra: that is the main photo that wins clicks in the search. If you already have a photo of your product, order a main marketplace photo: you upload your picture, and get the product alone on white, centered and square. Payment is released only after you approve the work.
