Lesson 2.1 — The 50/30/20 rule (excerpt)
Goal: by the end of this lesson you can split your take-home pay into three parts and see which one is out of balance.
Imagine your take-home pay is $3,000 a month. The 50/30/20 rule says:
- 50% — needs ($1,500): rent, groceries, transport, minimum loan payments. Things you'd still pay for if you lost your job tomorrow.
- 30% — wants ($900): eating out, streaming, gym, trips. Life is meant to be enjoyed; this part makes the budget something you can actually live with.
- 20% — future you ($600): emergency fund, extra debt payments, saving for goals.
Here's the honest part: in many cities rent alone eats 40% of a first salary. That's fine. The rule is a compass, not a law. If needs take 60%, the question is simply: where do the extra 10% come from — wants, or future you, and for how long?
Example. Sam earns $2,800. Rent and bills: $1,550 (55%). Wants: $950 (34%). Savings: $300 (11%). Sam doesn't need to cut everything. Moving $150 from takeaway to savings brings him to 16% in one step.
Practice task
- Take last month's spending from Lesson 1.1
- Sort every line into Needs, Wants or Future
- Work out each share as a percentage of take-home pay
- Write one change that moves you 5% closer to 50/30/20
Quick check (with answers)
- Your phone bill is a… need (you need a working phone; the newest model is a want)
- Paying more than the minimum on a credit card counts as… future you
- True or false: if your needs exceed 50%, the budget has failed. False — adjust the other two parts
Client: a personal finance coach. Audience: people aged 20–30 with a first full-time job. Format: short video lessons with a text version and a worksheet.

About this service
On Teachable, Kajabi or Thinkific you sell the course under your own brand, so the lessons have to keep paying students engaged without a marketplace around them. We plan modules and lessons the way these platforms organize them, write lesson pages that work as text with or without a video above them, and add a welcome lesson that tells students how the course works. For drip courses we suggest which module opens on which day.
What is included
- What you getA program of modules and lessons with goals and, from Standard, full lesson pages with a welcome lesson, tasks and quizzes. It comes as formatted text on the order page that you paste into the lesson editor of your platform.

What we need from you
The topic, who buys the course and what result they pay for, your platform, whether lessons open all at once or over time, and your notes pasted as text. Documents can also be attached as PDF, Word or Excel files.
We will ask you:
- Which platform will host the course?
- What result does the student pay for?
- Do lessons open all at once or over time?
- Will each lesson have a video?

Questions and answers
Do you upload the lessons for me?
No, we do not log in to your school. You paste the texts into the lesson editor, which takes a few minutes per lesson.
Can you write the sales page too?
The sales page is a separate order. Here we focus on what students get after they buy.
Does the platform change the texts?
Only the names of the parts: sections, chapters or modules. Tell us your platform and we use its terms.
