About this service

When you let a client, brand or publisher use your photos, music, illustrations or footage, a licence spells out exactly what they may do and for how long, while you keep the copyright. We fill in the template with the works, the type of use (web, print, advertising, broadcast, merchandise), territory, term, exclusivity, credit line, fee or royalty, and what happens if the work is used beyond the licence. It suits photographers, composers, illustrators and video creators selling usage rights directly.

What is included

  • What you getA filled-in licence agreement with the works, permitted uses, territory, term, exclusivity, credit and fee, as text and a .docx file, plus a checklist. It is a template, not legal advice: have a lawyer in your country check it before use.

What we need from you

You and the licensee, your countries, the works being licensed, how they will be used, where and for how long, whether it is exclusive, the fee or royalty and how you want to be credited.

We will ask you:

  • What works are you licensing?
  • How will the licensee use them?
  • Exclusive or non-exclusive?
  • What fee or royalty is agreed?

Questions and answers

Is this legal advice?

No. It is a template for information. Copyright and licensing rules differ by country, so have an IP lawyer check it, especially for large or exclusive deals.

Is a licence the same as selling the copyright?

No. A licence lets someone use the work on agreed terms while you stay the owner. Transferring copyright needs a different document.

Does it cover music sync or stock sites?

Sync licences for film or ads are covered as a use type. Stock agencies have their own terms, so this template is for direct deals.
