About this service

Old newspaper and magazine clippings are hard to read and harder to share: narrow columns, faded print, articles that jump to another page and fonts from another century. Photograph the clippings and we type each article in reading order, with headline, byline, publication and date where they are visible, so you can search, quote and keep them. Faded or torn words are marked instead of guessed.

What is included

  • What you getEach clipping typed as a separate article with its headline and source line, on the order page and as a Word (.docx) file; in Premium also an index of all clippings (date, publication, headline) as an Excel (.xlsx) file.
  • Column orderText follows the article, not the layout
  • Source linePublication, date and page where visible
  • Old spellingKept or modernized, as you choose
  • Damage marked[faded] and [torn] instead of guesses
  • Clippings indexIn Premium: a table of all items

What we need from you

Clear photos of the clippings, flat and well lit, the language and, if you know them, the publication and date of each.

We will ask you:

  • What language are the clippings in?
  • Should old spelling stay as printed?
  • Do you know the publication and date of each clipping?
  • What are the clippings for?

Questions and answers

Can you read Fraktur or pre-reform spelling?

Yes, if the photo is sharp. Words we cannot read with confidence are marked with [?].

An article continues on another page. What should I do?

Send both parts and say they belong together; we join them into one article.

How many pictures can I attach?
