Trends and outliers
- July and August made 41% of revenue; occupancy reached 93%.
- March and April were weakest (occupancy 38%), but weekend nights still sold at 79%: the gap is midweek.
- Cancellations were 19% for platform bookings with free cancellation and 4% for direct bookings with a deposit.
- Outlier: 6 bookings in May at $45 per night. These are all one corporate group with a manual discount; they were kept in totals but flagged.
Findings
- Your most profitable guests are direct, returning guests, yet only 14% of platform guests were invited to book direct next time.
- Midweek in spring is the only real gap; weekends sell themselves.
- Free cancellation on platforms costs about 27 lost nights over 9 months.
Recommendations
- Add a "book direct" card at check-out with a 10% returning-guest rate: still $20 above platform net.
- Create a midweek spring offer (3 nights for the price of 2, Sun–Thu) for March–April.
- Switch platform listings to a non-refundable rate at 8% off alongside the flexible one.
- Track the booking channel for every guest from now on: 17 rows had no channel and were grouped as "direct".
All totals were cross-checked against the monthly sums in your sheet; the difference is $0.
Client: a 12-room guesthouse by a lake, run by two owners Data: 284 booking rows, January to September (date, room type, nights, channel, price paid, cancellation) Question asked: "Which channel and which months actually make us money, and where are we losing it?"
The client and all details are made up.
About this service
What visitors type into your own search box is the most direct list of what they want and cannot find: products you do not stock, words you do not use, pages buried in the menu. Export the search terms report from your analytics or shop platform, and we group the terms by theme, find searches that return nothing or lead to exits, and spot spelling variants and synonyms your search does not understand. You get a list of fixes for the catalogue, navigation and content, ranked by how many visitors each one affects.
What is included
- What you getA report with search themes and their share, zero-result and exit-heavy searches, a synonym and misspelling list for your search settings and ranked fixes for catalogue, menu and content, as formatted text on the order page and as Word (.docx) and Excel (.xlsx) files.
- Themes and shareWhat visitors look for most
- Zero-result searchesDemand you are missing

What we need from you
An export of site search terms with counts (and results, exits or conversions if your tool has them) as an Excel file or pasted text, the period it covers, what the site sells or offers and the platform you use.
We will ask you:
- Where does the export come from?
- What does your site sell or offer?
- Which period does the export cover?
- Does your export show zero results, exits or conversions?

Questions and answers
My analytics does not track site search. What can I do?
Many shop platforms and search plugins have their own report. If you have none yet, turn tracking on and order once you have a few weeks of data.
Do you change my search settings?
No. We never log in to your site or analytics. You get the synonym list and fixes to apply.
Can this help with SEO too?
Often. Words your visitors use inside the site are good hints for page names and content, and we note them.
