Bike Mechanic (full-time, workshop)
Spokewell Cycles · Riverside district · $21–25 per hour, depending on experience
We are a neighbourhood bike shop that fixes about 60 bikes a week: commuter bikes, kids' bikes, e-bikes and the odd vintage racer. Our workshop is busy from March to October, and we are looking for a mechanic who enjoys solving problems and explaining them to customers in plain words.
What you will do
- Diagnose and repair bikes booked in for service: brakes, gears, wheels, bearings
- Build new bikes from the box and set them up for the rider
- Write a short, clear note on each repair ticket and tell the customer what was done
- Keep the workshop tidy and tools in order
- Help on the shop floor on busy Saturdays
What you need
- At least 1 year of hands-on bike repair, paid or volunteer
- Confidence with hydraulic disc brakes and indexing gears
- Ability to plan your day around a booking list and say early when a job will run late
Nice to have
- Experience with e-bike motors and batteries
- Wheel building
- A recognised mechanic qualification
If you meet the "need" list but not all the "nice to have", please apply anyway.
What we offer
- 38 hours a week, Tuesday to Saturday, finishing at 6 pm
- Paid training on e-bike systems in your first 3 months
- Staff price on parts and bikes, and a free yearly service for family members
- 25 days of paid leave, taken mostly in the quiet winter months
How to apply
Send a few lines about the bikes you have worked on and your availability to [email]. No cover letter needed. We reply to everyone within 5 working days and invite shortlisted people to a paid 2-hour trial shift.

About this service
A good test task shows how a candidate actually works without asking for days of unpaid effort or free work you could use. We design a task for your role that mirrors a real situation, fits in two to four hours, comes with clear instructions and a deadline, and is scored against a written guide so every candidate is judged the same way. It works for roles from marketing and sales to support, operations, design and analytics.
What is included
- What you getA test task with instructions for candidates and a scoring guide with criteria and levels, and in higher packages an outline of what a strong answer contains. You get it as text you can paste or download as a file.
- Real situationA task close to the actual job
- Fair time limitTwo to four hours, stated up front
- Scoring guideCriteria and levels for each
- Strong answer outlineWhat reviewers look for
How it works
- 1RoleYou describe the role and skills
- 2TaskWe design the task and instructions
- 3ScoringWe write the guide for reviewers
What we need from you
The role and its main tasks, the skills you want to test, how much time candidates should spend, the materials you can share and how you will review the answers.
We will ask you:
- Which role is the task for?
- Which two or three skills matter most?
- How much time should a candidate spend?
- Will you pay candidates for the task?

Questions and answers
Is it fair to ask for a test task?
Yes, if it is short, related to the job and not something you will use. We design it that way and say so in the instructions.
Can you make tasks for developers?
Yes, as a written brief with requirements and scoring. We do not build starter code or run candidates' solutions.
Will you review candidates' answers?
No, the scoring guide lets your team do it consistently.
