Bike Mechanic (full-time, workshop)
Spokewell Cycles · Riverside district · $21–25 per hour, depending on experience
We are a neighbourhood bike shop that fixes about 60 bikes a week: commuter bikes, kids' bikes, e-bikes and the odd vintage racer. Our workshop is busy from March to October, and we are looking for a mechanic who enjoys solving problems and explaining them to customers in plain words.
What you will do
- Diagnose and repair bikes booked in for service: brakes, gears, wheels, bearings
- Build new bikes from the box and set them up for the rider
- Write a short, clear note on each repair ticket and tell the customer what was done
- Keep the workshop tidy and tools in order
- Help on the shop floor on busy Saturdays
What you need
- At least 1 year of hands-on bike repair, paid or volunteer
- Confidence with hydraulic disc brakes and indexing gears
- Ability to plan your day around a booking list and say early when a job will run late
Nice to have
- Experience with e-bike motors and batteries
- Wheel building
- A recognised mechanic qualification
If you meet the "need" list but not all the "nice to have", please apply anyway.
What we offer
- 38 hours a week, Tuesday to Saturday, finishing at 6 pm
- Paid training on e-bike systems in your first 3 months
- Staff price on parts and bikes, and a free yearly service for family members
- 25 days of paid leave, taken mostly in the quiet winter months
How to apply
Send a few lines about the bikes you have worked on and your availability to [email]. No cover letter needed. We reply to everyone within 5 working days and invite shortlisted people to a paid 2-hour trial shift.

About this service
A performance improvement plan works only when it is specific: which results fall short, what good looks like in numbers or examples, what support the employee gets and when progress will be reviewed. We write a PIP template your managers can fill in, with sections for the gaps, measurable goals, support, check-in dates and possible outcomes, in a fair, neutral tone that keeps the door open. Higher packages also fill it in for your case from the facts you give and add a check-in notes template.
What is included
- What you getA PIP template with instructions for managers, in higher packages a plan filled in for your case, and in Premium a template for check-in meeting notes. You get it as text you can paste or download as a file.
- Specific gapsFacts and examples, not labels
- Measurable goalsWhat success looks like by date
- SupportTraining, coaching, resources
- Check-insDates and what is reviewed
- Neutral toneFair and respectful throughout

- 2TemplateWe write the PIP and guidance
- 3ReviewHR or a lawyer checks it
What we need from you
The role, the performance gaps with dates and examples, what good performance looks like, the support you can offer, the length of the plan and your company's HR rules, if any.
We will ask you:
- What role is the plan for?
- What exactly falls short, with examples?
- How long should the plan run?
- Which country's employment rules apply?

Questions and answers
Can we rely on the plan legally?
It is a template and wording help, not legal advice. Employment rules differ by country, so have HR or an employment lawyer check the plan before you use it.
Will the plan sound like a warning?
We keep it factual and supportive. Consequences are stated plainly but without threats, which is fairer and easier to defend.
Can we reuse it for other employees?
Yes, the template is generic. The filled-in version is for the case you describe.
